Glossary of Terms

Astringents: - Astringents help dry up excess oil on the surface of the skin, leaving the skin with a temporary ‘tight’ feeling.

Anti-oxidants: - Anti-oxidants are a unique group of vitamins and minerals that helps the body rid itself of free radicals that cause cell damage.

Botanicals: - Botanicals are the dried parts of plants, such as the leaves or flowers and are used for their beneficial qualities being either theraputic or cosmetic.

Dermabrasives: - Dermabrasives are agents that remove (exfoliate) the layer of dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Natural exfolliants used by LanaB include pumice stone, tea tree powder and mineral salts.

Emollients: - Emollients prevent the skin becoming dry and also protect it by providing a barrier, they also soften the skin. Natural emollients nourish the skin because they are metabolised by the skin’s own enzymes and are readily absorbed.  At LanaB we use Avocado, Jojoba, Rosehip Oil and Shea Nut Butter, all wonderful natural emollients.

Emulsifiers: - Emulsifiers hold two ingredients together that don’t normally mix, usually oil based and water based substances. When emulsified the two ingredients blend together easily and prevent separation when stored.

Epidermis: - The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin.

Free Radicals: - Free Radicals are unstable molecules in the skin that form as a result of natural body processes such as aging and environmental factors such as sun. They destroy proteins, enzymes and vitamins, that the skin needs to replenish itself, which results in wrinkles.

Humectants: - An humectant attracts water from the air and holds it within the skin, thus preventing the skin from losing moisture and drying out.

Surfactants: - Surfactants dissolve oils and grease from the skin and hold dirt in suspension so it can be washed away from the body with water.

Thickeners: - Thickeners are used in skincare products to add body or to stabilise emulsions. They include waxes, gums, clays, starches and mineral compounds.
